Two of the more commonly asked-about services on a recharge retailer's wallet are AEPS and Micro ATM (MATM). Both let a retailer act as a mini banking point — useful in areas where the nearest bank branch or ATM is inconvenient to reach.
What Is AEPS?
Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) lets a customer withdraw cash, check their balance, or do a mini bank transfer using just their Aadhaar number and a fingerprint scan — no debit card or PIN needed. The retailer provides a biometric device connected to the AEPS service, the customer authenticates with their fingerprint, and the transaction is processed against their linked bank account.
What Is a Micro ATM (MATM)?
A Micro ATM is a card-based alternative to AEPS. The retailer uses a small card-swipe device (often connected to a phone or tablet) so customers can withdraw cash or check balances using their debit card and PIN, similar to a full-size ATM but from a retail counter.
Why Retailers Add These Services
- They serve customers who don't have convenient access to a bank branch or ATM, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas
- They bring in a category of customer who may also use the shop for recharge, bill payments or FASTag while they're there
- Commission is typically earned per successful transaction, adding to whatever else the shop already offers
What to Check Before Offering AEPS or MATM
These services involve handling customers' banking credentials and biometric data, so a few things matter more here than for simple recharge:
- Confirm the biometric/card device is from a provider that meets applicable banking and UIDAI compliance standards
- Understand the daily transaction limits — AEPS and MATM typically have per-transaction and per-day caps set by the banking partner, not the retailer
- Keep clear transaction records/receipts for customers, since these are effectively cash-out banking transactions
Where It Fits Alongside Recharge
Because AEPS and MATM run through banking correspondent partners rather than the recharge platform itself, availability and commission structures can vary by location and by which banking partner is connected. It's worth confirming current terms with your platform before actively promoting these services to customers.
